How To Fix Cracked, Broken, Or Exploded Tiles

The beauty of your home's floor or walls depends on a lot of things. Some people like to paint their walls in bold patterns, while others prefer a more minimalist look with exposed concrete. Tile is a popular choice for flooring because it's natural, attractive, and comes in a variety of styles. But even tile can start to deteriorate over time. In this article, we'll show you how to fix cracked, broken, or exploded tiles to get your floor looking its best again.

Loose floor tiles

Here's an easy way to check if your tiles are loose: cup your hands and tap them like you're knocking on a door. If you hear a hollow sound, that means the tile is starting to come loose. If this happens on the floor, it may not be a big deal, but it might feel a bit wobbly. However, if it happens on the wall, the tile could fall off, which is dangerous. It's important to fix this problem right away.

Exploded floor tiles

Exploded floor tiles are easier to spot than loose floor tiles. They'll warp and break into pieces, leaving you with a mess. This is usually caused by moisture or temperature changes underneath the tiles. The tiles expand and contract, pushing against each other, and then explode.

Next, let's talk about how to fix cracked or loose floor tiles. The most common way to fix tiles is to replace them with new ones. So, it's a good idea to remember the brand and model of the tiles you have so you can get the right ones.

How to fix loose, explored, or cracked floor tiles:

1. Remove the old tile

Before you start putting down the new tile, you need to remove the old tile first. Don't forget to scrape off the adhesive that was used to hold the old tile in place. Then, brush off any dirt or dust, and clean the surface thoroughly.

2. Mix the tile adhesive

Mix the tile adhesive with water in a 3:1 ratio (3 parts adhesive, 1 part water). Mix until smooth, then use a low-speed drill to stir. Let it wait for about 10 minutes to let the adhesive soak in.

3. Spread the tile adhesive on the surface

Stir the adhesive again before use. Then, use the smooth side of the trowel to spread the adhesive on the area where you want to lay the tile. Then, use the grooved side of the trowel to create grooves.

4. Spread the adhesive under the tile

Spread the adhesive under the floor tile until it is completely covered. Then, place the tile on the surface so that the back of the tile is in contact with the adhesive. You will have about 15 minutes to adjust the tile to the desired alignment before the adhesive starts to set. Once you are satisfied with the alignment, leave it for 24 hours.

5. Grout the floor tiles

After 24 hours, use ready-made grout to fill the gaps between the floor tiles. Then, smooth it out to make it flush with the surface. This will help to join the tiles together better.

Here are 5 easy steps to fix loose, explored, or cracked floor tiles that you can do yourself. No need to call a contractor and waste money. The materials, equipment, and tools you buy can be stored for future use. It's not a waste. Try it.
