Types of Light Bulb Bases And How To Choose The Right One

One bulb has a bottom that can be rotated to replace the bulb. This part is called the light bulb base. Many people may be wondering how many types of light bulb bases there are. Because some people may have had problems when they bought a light bulb and couldn't put it in because they were different types. Therefore, Thai Watsadu would like to take you to know more about “light bulb bases”. After this, it's time to change or buy a light bulb so you can make the right choice. Do not be upset about changing the lamp that does not match the original lamp holder in your house. Mainly, the light bulb base that is commonly used by people can be divided according to the shapes into 2 forms, which are screw base and bi-pin bulb base type.

Edison Screw Base

Screw base type light bulbs are threaded. When you buy a replacement bulb, you must buy the same screw base type so that they can rotate together. Because if buying different types, they will not rotate together, there is no way for the lights to light up. However, in the form of a screw base, it can be divided into many types such as E10, E11, E12, E14, E17, E27, E39, E40, etc. This number is the diameter of the bottom body of the bulb in millimeters, for example E27 = 27 mm. Commonly used in home buildings are:

  • E14: Electricians will call this light bulb base a small socket. The most popular shapes used are Champa or cylinder shape. In the past, this light bulb base only had incandescent bulbs that consumed more electricity, but now it has been developed to include LED bulbs. If anyone wants to change from incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs, they can go buy them at a light bulb store because the bulb bases are the same type.
  • E27: It is a light bulb base that is widely used in homes. In the past, this type only had gourd-shaped and ping pong-shaped incandescent bulbs. Later, it was developed to be able to be used with chopstick bulbs or energy-saving stick bulbs. And now there are LED bulbs for the E27 light bulb base.
  • E40: larger than E27 type, used with high-wattage bulbs or lamps such as floodlights, spotlights, high bay lights, suitable for areas that require a lot of light. Importantly, now E40 bases are all supported by LED bulbs. Which the manufacturer has designed to be of better quality, lighter weight and can be used for a longer time as well.

BI-pin base or Twist and Lock base

Another type of light bulb base is the bi-pin base. The light bulb connector area has prongs protruding to be used to fit snugly into the socket or to push and twist light bulbs together to work. There are many different types of bi-pin base, such as GU10 G4 GU4 GU5.3 G9 G12. This number is the measurement of the distance between the two legs in millimeters, for example G13 = 13 mm. The commonly used ones are:

  • GU10: features with twist-lock legs, often used with cup halogen bulbs. This type of light usually shines on the floor, so it must have a lock to prevent the bulb from falling. Nowadays, GU10 light bulb sockets also have LED bulbs that can be used.
  • G13: Most people call it a neon lamp socket. It means that it must be used with a fluorescent light bulb. If it is an old fluorescent light bulb, in order for the light to turn on it must work with a ballast and starter. But nowadays there are LED bulbs, which are easier to use, save more energy, and have a much longer lifespan. You don't have to rely on accessories, and they're easy to work with.
  • GU5.3: has the appearance of a 2-pointed tapered rod with a distance of 5.3 millimeters between them. Commonly used with cup-shaped halogen bulbs, capsule-shaped halogen bulbs, and MR16 bulbs. They range from small to large sizes used for showcase lighting. If you want to use a narrower bulb, there is also a GU4 with a distance between the rods that is slightly narrower than the GU5.3 socket.

In conclusion, it is important to observe whether the light bulb socket can be used with the original socket that is already in the house or not. It is considered one of the checklists for how to choose and buy light bulbs. Because choosing a light bulb base with polarity that doesn't correspond to the light bulb at home may result in having to spend money to buy a new bulb. The type of light bulb screw base can be easily understood: screw base type and bi-pin type. When buying a screw type, you must buy a screw type bulb as well so that they rotate together. The bi-pin type has two legs plugged into the light holder for the lamp to work. However, there are many different types of light bulb sockets. You should choose one that is suitable for the support light bulb holder.
